WC FEBRUARY 3

Went over to Southampton on Monday morning to meet up with one of the Island’s most successful cricketers of all time – David Griffiths. He has played first-team cricket for Hampshire since 2006. Now he is moving on the play for Kent, as his contract with Hampshire has run out. He is looking forward to the new challenge. David appears on John Hannam Meets on Sunday February 16.

Went to see The Perfect Murder, written by a recent guest of JH Meets, Peter James, on Tuesday. What a great comedy-thriller and Les Dennis and Claire Goose were outstanding in the lead roles. Peter, who has sold 15 million crime books, has made a real success of his first play for the stage.

Had a super afternoon on Wednesday when I gave a talk at the Southern Vectis Club, Newport, to a group of former employees. So enjoyable – and two of my old girl friends turned up. That was a nice surprise and we had a photograph taken together.

I enjoyed the Apollo Players production of Lady in the Van on Thursday night. Fiona Gwinnett was outstanding as Miss Shepherd. Lots of top local actors in cameo roles. It was just a little too long, particuarly the first half. Nice to see more in the theatre than on my last visit.

Had some real fun at Friday lunchtime when I went to the County Press to interview one of their best-known reporters – Richard Wright. He was in top form and it was enjoyed by both of us. It can be heard on Sunday February 16. His CP colleagues should not miss it.

I enjoy attending shows at the Totland Village Hall and their third 60s Night presentation was the best yet from Bob Everson and co. They had a few new members on show and they helped contribute to a very successful evening. The two welcoming ladies were nearly dressed in some fascinating short costumes. It added to the atmosphere – and tested my pacemaker. My eyes did leave the stage a few times!!!

Ended the week with a visit to Shanklin’s Lower Hyde complex to see the Island’s ageless musicians Brian Sharpe, Doug Watson and Keith Roberts. As ever, a brilliant night and this year there was barely a wait at the bar. Last year I queued for 30 minutes for two tonic waters and then gave up. This year I had a free cup of tea from hospitality and called that it. Always nice to see a few long-term friends and some were even older that the band!
