The early part of the week was undertaken with research for my Wednesday interview with Sir Ian McKellen in London. With such a long and celebrated career I tried to work on many of the highlights from his life and the wide variety of acting roles he has undertaken.
I was so excited when I reached the Harold Pinter Theatre, at Piccadilly Circus. All the great actors I have interviewed during my 45 years as a showbiz writer and broadcaster have all been so welcoming . None has had huge egos. Sir Ian was a perfect gentleman with not a hint of any self importance. I have met many small time actors who have thought the world of themselves. Such a thrill to be sat in the same room as him. He also gave me a 40 minute interview – and was so kind in several different ways. The outcome could be another superb British actor. Who could follow Dame Judi and Sir Ian. Time will tell. I took him up my book on movie and showbiz stars – and, thankfully, he was impressed. “I can’t wait to read it ” were his last words to me.
Friday was rather different. Three of us, including my daughter Caroline, were searching for an old family grave in St Helens cemetery – and her and Bertie found it.
It seems I am now heading to Bath in a few days time to interview a star from Call The Midwife. I have never missed one episode of this brilliant series. More will be revealed soon.
