Went to the Kings Theatre, Southsea, to see the matinee of Evita, It was the fifth time I had seen this marvellous Bill Kenwright production. I have seen several changes of cast and was keen to see Glenn Carter and Mike Sterling (pictured), who both play leading roles, as I interviewed them both in Brighton recently. I was impressed with both of them and Lucy O’Byrne, who was one of the best Eva Person’s I had seen for a while – and I go back to watching the superb Marti Webb in the title role. It runs until Saturday 17 November.
Had a brilliant end of the week. On Saturday night I went to the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, to watch two of my lifetime greats – Jimmy Tarbuck and Des O’Connor. It was an evening to savour. Spent 30 minutes before the show with my long-term friend Jimmy Tarbuck. Like Des, he’s a real credit to his business. He loves talking about the Island – and he’s now got one of my new books to find out even more. The audience just loved the show and cheered for more after over two hours. Des’ wife, singer Jodie Wilson, came up from the audience to brilliantly sing a song that brought the house down. Ran in to my old friend Lawrie McMenemy – another gem of a man. Southampton won matches and scored goals when he was their manager – and all his team were British. He loves watching Tarby.
