WC SEPTEMBER 19.
Had a quick unexpected visit to the London home of legendary television news presenter Peter Snow on Tuesday. What a lovely guy and he made me so welcome. He also gave me a copy of his brilliant new book on the amazing life of the Duke of Wellington. Peter loves the Isle of Wight and has sailed here on numerous occasions. Had an early scare when the Red Jets encountered early morning fog but thanks to some great skill people were able to get to Southampton with the minimum of delays. Broadcaster Alex Dyke was in the queue with me. He was worrying about whether he could make his programme on a mainland radio station. In the end – we both made it.
On Wednesday I had confirmation that one of the greatest cricketers the Island has ever produced has agreed to be on John Hannam Meets.
Several interviews have suddenly come in and these will be revealed shortly, including one or two I have been chasing for some time.
Saturday lunchtime proved a problem at Ventnor Cricket Club. Island-born Danny Briggs, now one of the country’s most highly rated cricketers, with Hampshire, was on a flying visit to play in the President’s match at Steephill. The umpire’s room was chosen for our interview location but my equipment would just not work. Fearing the worst – and more expense – I was relieved to find it was actually their plug sockets at fault. Thankfully, it all ended well and Danny is on JH Meets on October 10.
